neighborhood character of tall multi-unit buildings." what about the neighborhood character that isn't next door to the building? what about the neighborhood character of people like us on jackson street on which there are multiple buildings that face this view? we're all affected by this one owner, one singular addition for one families. we're not talking about adding more space for families, but a penthouse for some owner who will block the view and dress decrease the value for all of us in the neighborhood. this is part of the character of the city. you can't encroach by building more and more higher and higher buildings. there was supposed to be a pre-application meeting. nothing. i went away for thanksgiving. i came back there was no notice. a neighbor sent me a xerox saying did you know there was a meeting about what was happening? i had no idea. there wasn't a meeting to discuss it and we were barely notified that, in fact, they were doing it. for these reasons i ask the planning commission to please put a stop to the project or at least to stop it right now for a moment s

insurance premiums not keeping pace with high medical costs this year that hit shares of united health care. the stock fell 4.7% as volume almost tripled. this is its lowest price since mid-november. investment bank deutsche bank downgraded its rating of the managed health insurance sector, including united health care to neutral. the analyst pointed to more competition for customers holding down premium price increases. retail stocks were in focus with many of them reporting december sales. we'll have more on that in a moment, but two very different retailers had very different updates on their financial outlooks. deep discount store family dollar cut its outlook after a disappointing quarterly profit. shares fell 13%, dropping to a 10 month low. teen apparel store hot topic jumped 11.1% to a new 52 week high. hott topic predicted its earnings growth this year to be twice what wall street analysts had expected. just what spiced ham needs, peanut butter. spam maker hormel foods is buying the skippy peanut butter business from unilever. hormel is paying $700 million for skippy. the deal

market is a little weakened. 3m up 13%, united technologies up 12%. they are naturals to repeat their gains if not do better, given their strong asian exposure. 3m has been held back by a weak china. they can only improve from here after that tax bill. two well-run companies, perfect proxies for worldwide growth. at&t 11% gains, even the most boring of stocks can generate double digit returns. i think the same gain is in the cards for this year. cisco, for all its flaws, still beat the dow by a percentage point. i can't see this company returning to the days of yore, that's not going to happen. but up 8%, it can do that again. cisco seems cheap enough. i think it can return to the mid 20s where it closed today. what's with merck falling so far behind an inferior pfizer going up at least historically. the pipeline needs improvement here or we'll see high single digits again. they will remain the order of the day if not the year until we hear about something that can produce multiple billions of dollars in the out years and i certainly don't see anything in merck's pipeline right now th
